How to prepare for a pest control visit

Start with the company's own instructions, because they depend on the pest and the products used. This is what to ask and what usually helps.

Ask these before the visit

  • What should I move or empty, and what should I leave alone?
  • How long should people and pets stay out of treated areas?
  • What about fish tanks, food, dishes and baby items?
  • Do I need to tell anyone with asthma, allergies or a pregnancy in the home to do anything differently?
  • Can I get the product names in writing?

What usually helps

Clear the areas the company wants to reach, like under sinks, along baseboards, or around the garage walls. Put food away. Vacuum if asked, and hold off on heavy cleaning afterward until you've asked when it's fine to mop.

Write down where and when you saw the pests. Keep a sample in a sealed bag if you can do it without handling anything risky. Have gates unlocked, and tell the company where the attic or crawl space access is.

By pest

Bed bugs: don't start moving belongings between rooms before talking to the company. Preparation lists are often specific.

Roaches: emptying under-sink cabinets and pulling items away from the stove may be requested. Ask first.

Termite fumigation: UC IPM notes that occupants, pets and plants need to be out for several days, depending on the structure. Ask for the full preparation list well ahead of time.

Rodents: have a look along the roofline and note any gaps or chewed vents to point out.

When it's over

  • Ask for a written record of what was done and what was used.
  • Ask what you should expect to see over the coming weeks.
  • Follow the re-entry time you were given.
  • Ask who to call if the problem continues.

Seeing something now? Make the call.

Say what you found, where you found it, and your ZIP. The company on the line can tell you how it would handle the job and what a visit involves.
